Name: Akiara Kenakobe
Age: 17 years
Race: Human female

Akiara is a member of the Kenakobe tribe, a family of warriors dwelling in the deep south of what used to be the United States. She is a highly skilled warrior, trained in the use of a sword, as her family has done for generations. However, when her family goes to battle one night, her best friend (and budding love interest) is playing for the opposing team and is killed in battle. Suddenly unsure of everything she’s ever known, she decides to leave everything behind and strike out on her own.

Name: Luke Makaio
Age: 18 years
Race: Human male / Messenger

Luke is a member of the Makaio tribe, one of many tribal groups that roams the southern part of what used to be the United States. While exploring one day he meets Akiara, and they become fast friends, quickly developing feelings for one another. But when Luke meets the Kenakobe in battle, they quickly dispose of him. Aki is devastated, but this isn’t his end – Luke becomes a Messenger and can’t proceed to the afterlife until he completes a task on Earth. He seems to be reaching out to Akiara from the other side, but can they ever be reunited?

Name: Zavier Kenakobe
Age: 19 years
Race: Human male
Rank: Lead Swordsman, Wolf Clan
Zavier is one of the Kenakobe tribe. He is Akiara’s cousin. He has expressed an athletic prowess since childhood that set his destiny as part of the tribe’s most elite warriors. When the Kenakobe go to battle, he is in charge of a smaller group of swordsmen, including Akiara. Zavier strikes the blow that takes Luke’s life.

Name: Eldora
Age: 9 years (equivalent to about 17 human years)
Race: Chio female
Eldora is a Chio, a genetically engineered species created by humans in America in the mid-21st century. She is Finnegan’s older sister, and dreams of one day becoming a warrior, a very well-respected position among her people. She and her brother were orphaned when they were younger, following the disappearances of first their father and then their mother, both presumed dead in combat against humans. When a strange illness overtakes her village, she and her brother are apparently immune. With no other choice, she takes on a mission to an unknown city to the north to find a cure and save her species.

Name: Finnegan
Age: 6 years (equivalent to about 13 human years)
Race: Chio male
Finnegan is Eldora’s younger brother. He has relied on her for most of his life, since losing both their parents, and looks to her as his role model. He would do anything to help her out, and is generally a good little brother, despite his tendencies to oversleep and get into trouble.

Name: Jazlyn
Age: 11 years (equivalent to approximately 21 human years)
Race: Chio female
Rank: Chio Village Leader
Jazlyn is one of the leaders of the Chios, and specifically commands the Chio Warriors. She is highly respected among her people, and has worked hard to get to where she is. But when a strange illness plagues the village, she succumbs just as most others do. She tells Eldora of the Chios’ true origin, and sends her on a mission to recover a vaccine for the Chios.

Name: Kyle Nekos
Age: 19 years
Race: Human male / Messenger
[Kyle] Nekos is a Messenger Akiara meets when she is captured while wandering the plains. He helps her escape, and tells her of his past – he is over 200 years old, but has been waiting generations for Akiara to be born. He needs her help in order to complete a task before he can move on to the afterlife. He was born and grew up in the early 21st century, but is keeping the details of his death a secret, at least so far. Akiara catches a glimpse of his memories when he uses his Messenger abilites to help heal her, but she is as of yet unable to piece together his true identity.

Other Notable Characters:

Dev: Another Chio, and a good friend to Eldora and Finnegan. Dev has always been close with them and looked out for their well being since losing their parents.

Eldora & Finnegan’s Mother: She’s their mom. Although she only appears briefly in chapter two, she is very protective of her children (as most moms are) and is prepared to give anything to protect them. She was a highly respected village elder herself, which is part of why Eldora dreams of becoming a warrior.

Dan Nekos: Kyle Nekos’ father. He’s an auto mechanic by profession, and loves spending time with his family. He is very outdoorsy and thus developed an interest in camping, fishing, and hunting. He tends to be very adamant about his beliefs (presumably passing this trait on to Kyle) which is what ultimately seals his fate.

The Old Woman: Nekos’ grizzled but grandmotherly neighbor who takes him in when she realizes that he’s in trouble. She may have a few loose marbles rattling around, but she’s got a clear enough head to know that the “Second Bullet” initiative is misguided. She has an orange cat named “Morris.”
