It’s not readily apparent in the story yet, but Messenger takes place in what (at the time) is the former United States. It is several hundred years after what is only known as “The Incident,” and much of the land has suffered a great deal of damage, making it nearly impossible to grow food or crops and extremely difficult to survive on.

The intense orange areas on the map are the areas of worst damage, with the green areas still “livable.” The green areas represent areas of less intense damage, where some plants and natural life still exist or have adapted to the environmental changes.

Akiara’s home at Kenakobe Hill is within one of the green zones, which helped to enable her people to survive as long as they have. They can sustain some basic farming and food growth on the land.

Eldora and Finnegan’s home in the Chio Village was within one of the more dangerous orange zones. Although there was little food naturally available, the Chios are scavengers and will eat whatever they can find.
